about

Originally I had created this body of work as an experiment in catharsis. At the time I was living in Tokyo and mostly working on commercial imagery that relied heavily on photo manipulation and production. In reaction to this work I wanted to create photographs without preconceived notions. No longer to make pictures, but to take pictures. I desired for the subject matter to speak for itself. I wanted to use the basic elements of photography and use a single mechanism in which to photograph with, forcing my eye to work within those confines and create imagery without modern technical options.

I decided ultimately on a plastic toy camera and color negative film. No light meter, no autofocus, no flash, and no photoshop. Turning the process into an act of observation and recording by breaking photography down into the most basic elements of light and time. I appreciate the mediums simple and direct approach to the subject. The use of color is also very important to my work for I feel it gives the silent images a voice and a sense of character. The parameters I set for myself have been the constant, while my subject matter is the variable. Subsequently I feel the photographs take on a unique narrative that could not be explained by words but truly do have a story of their own.
